Campfire Reading by Flashlight

I can’t lie, this post was inspired by the MANY power outages I am seeing from my fellow southerners on social media right now. Texas to Tennessee is experiencing a major winter storm of snow and ice that’s knocked out power for thousands.

We can all agree that no power=no fun for many reasons, but this post is meant to give you a reason to celebrate your darker days!

Every once in a while, I would give my students the opportunity during their library block to “Campfire read” and it turned out to be a huge hit. What’s even better is this activity is something you can do with your young readers at home too!

What you need:

  • Flashlights- one for each student or pair (I bought these off of Amazon and had an adult volunteer load the batteries in for me!)
  • Book(s) for each student

To make it even more cozy I had a burning fireplace video playing on our SmartBoard and turned out the lights. I have included a 12 hour one below-

Since my library blocks include student choice center time, I had half of my library dark (the side that included the SmartBoard) to allow for campfire reading and the other half lit for the makerspace and other activities for the day.

Campfire reading quickly became a student favorite and was great to use for those extra rowdy days around Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

I hope your young readers enjoy this activity! It’s so versatile, easy and brings warmth and joy to reading which is always the goal.
